Abstract Based on the city's spatial and formal definition described in the theory of the "city of the Age III" in Christian de Portzamparc, this study aims to examine its background characteristics and the way he actually put into practice the "open blocks" system. The peculiarity of the urban aspects of Paris taken into account, the mixed residental complex projects-the two projects in the 1970's and the two projects of the 1990's-will be compared and analysed through several concepts : architectural form and space, the processing of urban-form creation, Portzamparc's architectural rule of game, environmental conditions and political changements. His idea and his experimental method, linking the architecture and the urban tissue invites us to think over our architectural identity and our urban context.
