Abstract Architectural design education in Korea has been changed for design credits and hours to be double. So contents and methods in design teaching is needed to be specialized. This study is to investigate the cases of design education of architecture program in UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, MIT and Yale, and seek the characteristics of design teaching at competitive institutes in USA. It is resulted in as followings: Architecture program is considered to be predominant to college name and university degree. This program in Georgia Tech, MIT and Yale have three or four tracks separated into design, theory and urban studies. Course work in UC Berkeley, MIT and Yale is classified to be special in contents, teaching method and class hour. But Georgia Tech is to be general. In Common they teach??Introduction to Architecture, Drawing and Design??in 2 years for the understanding of them, and Introduction to Architectural Design and Senior Studio for the practice. Teaching methods are formed with lecture, discussion and assignment in introductory level, and with studio, project, seminar and representation in advanced level. Credits and hours in every program vary to teaching methods and contents.
