Abstract Even though housing developers in Korea recently started to research on design methods in response to various users' need for sustainable and friendly environment and, changing circumstances of housing development, there exist needs for well-designed public outdoor space and master planning for the comfort of future residents. However, it has raised questions about the appropriate design method and its performances in the development process from the aspect of planning concepts, decision making process, building construction, marketing, administrative supports, etc. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of various design methods and its effects in design process for housing complexes. It also aimed to suggest adequate design methods for each development case, including master plan for the future housing development. Literature survey found that there were slight differences among various design methods and the application of design method were important in selecting preferred development concepts. More over, expert opinion survey indicated that Master Architect(MA) design method was predominant over other design methods in inducing diverse concepts, constructing public open space, coordinating with upper planning elements, and processing of master plan. Cross-check through the case study also indicated that MA design method was significant in reflecting side walking axis, central plaza, supportive facilities, various unit plans, diverse orientations, type of building blocks, water related facilities and connection with neighborhood blocks.
