Abstract This paper reports on the evaluation of the initial stiffness of steel joints using component method as well as experimental tests. The component method is currently the widely accepted procedure for the evaluation of the various design values. According to the component method, application of the component method to steel joints requires the following three main steps : (1) definition of the constitutive components, (2) evaluation of their mechanical properties, (3) assembly of the components to derive the joints properties. An application to a cantilever beam-to-column steel joint is presented and compared to the experimental results obtained under cyclic loading condition. Comparison between numerical and experimental results allows to conclude that the numerical model is able to simulate, with a good level of accuracy for initial stiffness, the behaviour of beam-to-column joints.
