Abstract Built environment is a open-system evolving with experience of ‘user'. The operating principle of open-system is ‘self-organization'. The purpose of this study is to consider the meaning of architecture that is self-organizing through active user's ‘creative engagement' and the architectural notions. For this, the process and principles of self-organization were examined. Active user engages creatively in the co-evolution of user and built environment, while self- organizing of ‘perception', ‘situation’, ‘construction’ in the 'meaning','function','material' level, and the architect is in charge of ‘catalyst'. To embody this, the architectural notion as ‘redundancy', ‘interdependency', ‘incompletion', ‘learning to learn’ were studied.
