Abstract The plural architectural characteristics of early Modernism and high Modernism were not studied correctly for over-simplified codified Modernism of International Style to represent Modern architecture. Based on this facts, this study analyzed Modernity as substantial Modernism through frame of analysis related to cultural, political, social dimension to draw potential critical characteristics of Modern architecture. Extracted architectural characteristics are social architecture, primitivism, nomaic, anti architecture, neutral architecture, self-organized architecture, regionalism,??monumental architecture, centerd-user, identity, place, architect's role, historial allusion etc. These have some relation with various alternatives of problematic contemporary architecture. This study can confirm the statement "go back to the root to earn correct solution on problem" is right. As a result extracted characteristics are expected to have an important role as a critical modernism. Accordingly, based on the reconsidered Modernity, analysis of Modern architecture is proper and effective to solve ethical disaster of contemporary architecture.
