Abstract |
The objective of this study is to investigate the architectural value of Dongrae Eupsung that had been built in 1731, especially on the systems of castle, construction process, organizations and situation of labor mobilization in the early 18th century. After suffering from the Japanese invasion(1592), the importance of having defensive facilities at the castle had been raised. As the result, some of province castles including Dongrae had been built according to the new concepts of defense. The organization of construction was under the supervision of military officials and local authorities. The construction was accomplished with mobilization of compulsory labor; farmers and laboured monks, and employment of some casual laborers. Although the number of casual laborers was not many, it is important that they had participated in local construction by government. The group of monks was believed to played important role in the project as professional builder controlled by their own system. In conclusion, the study has shown a??provincial situation of construction in 18th century, more study is necessary to know about construction conditions and methods in the late Chosun dynasty. |
