Abstract The tensile structure system is a system that is composed with tensile members. There are tension main system, vector system, and supported bending system, which have various tensile structure formations. In this paper, for architectural planning, the composition elements and the composition pattern that have an effect on the architectural characters was investigated in tensile structure system. Thus, it was examined that the composition elements are tension member, profile shape, anchorage, arrangement and stabilizing. And each tensile structure formation represents the typical architectural characters that are classified into three categories as these elements is composed. One is the form developable type that the composition of structure member influences the design of exterior form, another is the general adoption type that there is no structural restriction in form and space, and the other is the large-unit space type that large space composition is obtained with respect to the closed plan type. For the extraction of the tensile structure characteristic, composition elements and tensile structure formations that are corresponded to these type groups have shown as the composit
