Abstract Because the novels set massive community called 'we' forth as a premise and characters are not isolated figures but typical examples, who hold a world view of contemporary social group in common this paper is intended to ascertain the transformation of images on apartment depicted in Korean popular novels. The apartment has appeared as a substitute housing type for cultural house through Korean War and 5.16 coup and their images have changed multifariously. In 1960s the image on apartment was yet negative, a low-quality housing in spite of compelling people to accept the apartment as a kind of modern living space and a type of social reform by government authorities. But in 1970s, this image was changes to positive one but has divided various meanings such as sneering wonder vs. convenient living space, a solitude or dissolution, and differentiation of classes etc. In 1980s images were added by socioeconomic and spatial meanings like a house of one's own, lost memory and space, isolation, and a nomadic people. After 1990s the negative images derived from the increasing anonymity and nooise have been a kind of metaphor beyond a simile as were past periods.
