Abstract The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural performance of RCS joint with cover plates. Each participating component to shear resistance was analyzed by FEA. Among three experimental test specimens from literature consisted of two cover plate types and one transverse tie bar type. The cover plate type specimens have band plates over steel flanges and cover plates around the joint. The specimens were modeled with solid elements for concrete and shell elements for steel beam, FBP, E-FBP,band plate and cover plate. The reinforcing bars were assumes to be smeared into concrete. The FEA showed that cover plates provide high capability of shear resistance while reducing crushing of outer concrete. The FBP can resist about 10% of joint shear regardless of joint details. The FEA showed that the cover plate in RCS joint can contribute to increase the capability of outer components which consisted with outer concrete, cover plate or transverse tie, FBP. However, the inner components of the transverse tie bar type provided about 70% of shear resistance. FEA results also showed that ASCE and Kanno's equations may underestimate the contribution of outer elements and the cover plates
