Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to suggest a new perspective on colonial modernity of Korean architecture under Japanese rule through reinterpretation on “Orientalism”. As primary source of the reinterpretation on orientalism, Edward W. Said’s colonial critique “Orientalism”, which is called ‘macro-orientalism’ in this paper, demonstrates how Western traditional dualism shaped concepts of orientalism and how long-term strategy of orientalism alienated “Colonized Other”. As secondary source, Post-Colonialism after “Orientalism”, which is defined as ‘micro-orientalism’ in this paper, deconstructs the dualism and discovers counter-narrative that was sentenced to immobility and silence under orientalism. With two methods of macro-orientalism and micro-orientalism, this paper makes a comparative study on the imperial modernity of Western and Japanese architecture, and??the colonial modernity of Korean architecture under imperialism. As the result, this paper proposes that colonial modernity of Korean architecture be formed in the way of “Colonized Othernesss” through such steps as mimicry, disturbed identity, counter-hegemony and resistant effects. |
