Abstract |
This study intends to investigate the performance of lower order solid finite elements being applied into free vibration analysis of thin plate and shell structures. The 8-node solid finite elements are formulated by three different strain-displacement relationships based on standard displacement formulation, B-bar method and enhanced assumed strain method respectively. First of all, the rate convergence study is performed by using square plate problem and the accuracy of solid elements is then investigated by using benchmark tests. The numerical results are throughly compared with the reference solutions obtained with 9-node assumed natural shell element. From numerical tests, the solid finite element formulated with enhanced assumed strain method exhibits an exceptional performance compared to other two solid finite elements and it has a very good agreement with the reference solution produced by shell finite element. Finally, we propose the present numerical analysis results as a benchmark test suite for the free vibration analysis of thin plate and shell structures with lower order solid elements. |
