Abstract This paper aims at proposing alternative apartment designs with the 'Stepped-level Planning Type' to improve the design of current Korean apartment housing. The proposed housing designs accommodate 5 variable thematic spaces accepting dwellers' various life style of modern times. In the process of adopting 5 different thematic spaces, 'Capacity Analysis' is critically used to study various horizontal and vertical factors of each space. The site of the stepped-level apartment housing proposed in this paper is a small-sized residential area located in KangNam, the southern part of Seoul. We propose a section package of two sectional units as a basic, and carry out support-design in consideration of the optimum space composition and the balance between sectional units in a section package. Also based on the capacity analysis of 5 different thematic spaces, this paper suggests alternative designs of each basic floor plan according to dweller's individual life style.
