Abstract Human beings cognize these spatial configurations and behave according to their perception of these configurations. Studies on cognition of spatial configuration elucidated that DEPTH is a very important factor that determines spatial cognition and human behavior (Hillier et al, 1996). However, they did not explain the influence of DEPTH on spatial cognition and human behavior as they compared it with that of DISTANCE. Other studies explained 'a change of direction' as an important element to cognize psychological DISTANCE. They argued that the more crossing points a path has, people cognize them to be longer (Sadalla, Staplin, Magel, 1980). However, they did not prove which has more influence on spatial cognition and spatial behavior when DEPTH increases and DISTANCE lengthens. Moreover, in a computational algorithm of Space Syntax Theory, spatial Integration is obtained based on DEPTH, with which the property of spatial configuration is analyzed. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the spatial cognition of human beings is based on spatial configuration, and it aims to examine to what extent the DEPTH and DISTANCE of spatial configurational factors influence spatial cognition.
