Abstract |
A successful museum certainly needs to make an ongoing growth and do more than maintaining the balance between the left and right section of the building such as expanding itself according to changes. The lacking space that is an inevitable result of increasing items and changes to their attributes requires for ongoing extension and reconstruction. By analyzing the cases of the British Museum and Tate Britain Museum, this study investigated the changes to the spatial structure of the two museums according to the extension and reconstruction projects. Literature study was conducted to understand the space topological characteristics of them, which qualitative analysis was compensated by the quantitative analysis based on space syntax. As a result, the two cases of the British and Tate Britain Museums made good examples of such a museum as tried to stay loyal to the original functions of a museum by expanding the old buildings that had failed to adapt to a new environment and by reconstructing them following the social backgrounds. |
