Abstract The building data modeling is always at the core of design computation in every phases of building design and construction.??As it is not easy to reconcile material and construction viewpoints, however, existing building data models could not easily apply these concepts within the CAD system. On the other hand, such models need more flexibility and complexity in order to handle associated meanings, activities, and design information when processed in various applications. Due to the recent advances in semantic web research, ontological approach seems to promise a flexible building information modeling. Ontology is an specification of a conceptualization, and provides a vehicle to construct a network of concepts for a semantically rich knowledge representation. In addition to its possibility of becoming a standard for knowledge sharing, the ontological method is worth to be investigated in the domain of architecture. The author has investigated the nature of building systems in order to build its formal descriptions, and a general ontological model for typical building has been developed using OWL and Protege. Some important elements of building data model are examined.
