Abstract The mechanism of pressure profiles caused by stack effect in office building is well known and it is proposed that improving the airtightness of the exterior wall is the effective solution for overcoming problems caused by stack effect. However, as high-rise residential buildings have different pressure distribution characteristics and many openable windows and balcony doors, this solution may not be suitable for overcoming stack effect problems in this case. In this paper, we explain the characteristics of pressure distribution caused by stack effect in high-rise residential building and reveal the problems that arise due to stack effect during the cold season. First, we carried out ‘work-through inspections' of two high-rise residential buildings to investigate the stack effect problems. Then, we conducted field measurements to obtain the pressure profiles of those buildings for clarifying the characteristics of pressure distribution.
