Abstract This study aims to develop a new shading device which is detached installation from the building. We called this system a Detached Exterior Shading Device(hereafter referred to as DESD). In this paper, we analyzed the environmental performance of DESD by using the IES VE. The results were proved to be an effective passive control system for improvement of building environment performance. Especially, DESD could reduce the cooling load of 2.908~3.171 ㎿h and generate about 7.290 ㎿h through the PV application. But DESD could increase the heating load of 1.670~2.406 ㎿h, nevertheless DESD can provide savings of about 1.165~3.164 ㎿h in annual air conditioning energy consumption. Consequently, we verified that DESD is much better than conventional shading device in utilizing the natural energy resource with daylight control, reductions in auxiliary air conditioning demand and PV applications for instance.
