Abstract As our cities have grown so has the need for public transportation. With the phenomenon of underground construction subways have become an efficient way of developing our cities. This has led to the growth of underground, maze like mini cities. From this has emerged shopping arcades connected along subway lines. The net result of this trend is that more people now spend a lot more time underground. The negative side effect to this is the greater risk of fire. The purpose of this study is to determine ways to cope with fire in underground, closed environments and find ways to save lives and minimize the damage to property from such events. The Daegu subway fire was chosen as this is a prime example of fire in an enclosed, underground environment. The parameters of our research involve analyzing the current refuge facilities, fire fighting capabilities currently in place to combat such possibilities additionally, the problems of combating underground fires will be looked at. Also considered are the legal shortcomings of current legislation which hamper effective safety measures.
