Abstract |
Culture Life Movement and Dwelling Reform Movement crystallized in the form of fourteen houses named Culture Houses(Bunka J?taku) at the Tokyo Peace Memorial Exposition in 1922. They were erected for the middle class with the purpose of breaking down the ill-effects of the double life and changing into the family-centered houses while heading for western small houses. The concept of Culture Houses had been spreaded out to all the area of Japan through media like magazines, newspapers and books and the suburban developments. It, however, had no choice but to collide against the reality of Japanese life style and find a compromise, going back to the interior corridor plan except a western parlor. After that, the term of Culture Houses were diffused throughout neighboring colonies while disappearing in Japan. |
