Abstract The natural ventilation can reduce 40% energy of buildings relative to mechanical ventilation system. The driving forces for natural ventilation are wind and buoyancy. And these forces have an effect on the characteristics of openings of rooms. The horizontal exterior wind to the room was assumed as wind force. This study evaluated the characteristics of airflow through single-sided openings with variable position and geometry by using CFD. The effectively expanded domain model for CFD analysis was proposed to calculate the effect of outdoor wind. The airflow rate of 3 types of single window position(lower, middle, upper window) and 1 type of the upper and lower window(0.7m vertical distance between the upper and lower window) were investigated. In buoyancy driven flow, the airflow rate of the upper and lower window was much bigger than that of single window, and the airflow rate of the single window was not enough. In wind driven flow, the airflow rate of the upper and lower window was about 2 times bigger than that of single window.
