Abstract It is increasing the air tightening of building owing to development of architectural technology. This is favorable to energy saving, but unfavorable to indoor air quality(IAQ). The problems on IAQ are occurred mainly by the lack of ventilation due to airtight building and by the harmful gas from the materials installed in building. ??There are lots of harmful gases contaminating indoor air, and new sources are continually discovered. The most representative sources are volatile organic compounds(VOCs) and formaldehyde(HCHO). Those sources have influence on human body seriously with not only emotional instability, dizziness but also blood, nervous system, therefore can be serious problem threatening residents' safety and furthermore construction safety. This study aimed to analyse the correlation between IAQ of apartments and contaminating gas in building materials in order to have an idea for the establishment of regulation about VOCs in building materials.
