Abstract Results of an experimental investigation on the influence of shear reinforcements on the control of splitting cracks and the enhancement of effective strength of concrete strut are summarized. Twenty four reinforced concrete two-span continuous deep beams with varying concrete strength, shear span-to-depth ratio, and combination of vertical and horizontal shear reinforcement were tested under two-point top loading. Test results showed that The two important functions of shear reinforcement to prevent progress of diagonal splitting cracks and to provide enhancement of effective strength factor greatly depended on shear span-to-depth ratio. Based on the test results, the reduction ratio of splitting crack width and the effective strength enhancement factor which reflects the increase of effective strength of concrete strut by beneficial influence of shear reinforcement were suggested.
