Abstract The concept of Buckling Restrained Braced Frames is relatively new and recently their use has increased in the U.S., Japan and Taiwan. However detailed design provisions for common practice are currently under development. In this study the response modification factors of bucking restrained braced frames (BRBF) were evaluated through nonlinear static analyses. Various design variables, such as number of stories, span length, yield strength of BRB, level of earthquake load, etc. The response modification factors were obtained by multiplying overstrength factors and ductility factors following the procedure proposed by ATC-19 & ATC-34. According to the analysis results, the response modification factors obtained from this study turned out to be larger than what is proposed in 'AISC/SEAOC Recommended Provisions for BRBF' in low story structure, and a little smaller in medium-story structures.
