Abstract It is necessary to secure plastic deformation capacity to improve energy absorption performance in plastic design of steel structures. One method for this purpose is restraining local buckling for the improvement of that capacity of wide flange beams which do not meet the limit of width-thickness ratio for the seismically compact section. This paper presents the result of loading tests and limit analysis on moment-rotation behavior of wide flange beam, and discusses on the fundamental notions of local buckling restraint. New method of local buckling restraint is proposed on account to these results of research, and verify clear-cut lines of validity and availability of proposed method.
