Abstract According to the increase of the Korean construction company's advance into foreign market with WTO's launching and joining OECD, the quality management system(QMS) is being used by construction firms in order to strengthen the capability of business through the implementation of the international and advanced quality management activities. However, there have been significant problems in stable implementation and settlement of quality, which seem to be caused by the lack of proper recognition and comprehension for quality requirements. The purpose of this research, accordingly, is to find and analyze nonconformity reports that were found when audited companies' QMS. This research was conducted by classifying of 583 nonconformity reports out of representative 15construction companies that have been audited periodically from 1997 to 2004. The results of research for the requirement of ISO 9000 showed that the most frequent classifying of nonconformities were generated in the areas of "document management" of the quality management system, "production and service provision" and "purchasing" of the product realization. The following, the area of "inspection and test" of the measurement, analysis and improvement was also appeared as main nonconformity frequently. Consequently, this research also shows that the corrective actions for disposition of nonconformities should be implemented more specifically in order to activate the quality improvement in construction firms.
