Abstract The number of working mothers has been constantly increased in our society, and this social phenomenon will be continuous. As they should perform two roles at home and in the labor force, their living characteristics and housing needs may be different from those of single income families. Also, their living characteristics and housing needs could be different according to the age of their youngest children. Based on the assumption this study was performed. To find out the residential characteristics and needs of double-income households, literatures were reviewed and a questionnaire survey were performed. Through the review of literature, new trends in housing design considering working mothers'needs in Japan and the US were identified. The examples from the review demonstrated some assistant services or new home designs for double income families. Through the questionnaire survey, such items as the demographic characteristics, the actual living conditions in their houses, patterns of their living, needs for the new house types and for the site, preference for the interior design were investigated. Based on the results, basic guidelines of housing plan and supportive services for double income residents were suggested.
