Abstract The aims of this study is to propose architectural design, management guidelines and reviewing the evacuation behavior patterns in the general hospitals. To achieve these purposes, the architectural characteristics of 4 general hospitals have been investigated, and the evacuation behavior and experiments were carried out for each one of these general hospitals.
The results of this study are as follows ;
(1) In architectural design of general hospitals, We recommend each floor in a hospital must be sub-divided at least two smoke compartments, completely separated by a rated fire/smoke barrier. (2) In design guidelines, the spacious ares around egress exit and stair, the alcove for storage should be preferable for successive evacuation of bedridden patient in ward. (3) The notification on evacuation exit are effective for occupant's evacuation behavior and reducing egress time in emergency situation.
