Abstract In this study the seismic performance of 1-, 3-, and 6-story buckling-restrained braced frames designed following energy-based seismic design procedure was evaluated. To this end the input energy spectra of 100 earthquake records were constructed, and the difference with the pseudo- acceleration response spectra was investigated. According to nonlinear static and dynamic analyses results, the structures designed by energy method satisfied the target displacement of 1.5 % of the story height. However the strength and stiffness of the structures turned out to be significantly lower than those designed by strength-based method.
