Abstract The introduction and operation of ISO 9001 in construction industry was to reinforce stability of company structure and competitiveness. In Korea's case, even though it has been tried and studied a lot relating to quality management activity over the last 10 years, stable settlement and effective maintenance of quality management activity are not being performed properly yet. The current study suggested the improvement measures for quality management activity by conducting data research on nonconformity cases at the time of quality certificate audit of domestic construction companies and by analyzing their causes. As the main contents, 295 nonconformity reports published at the time of quality certificate audit for representative domestic design and construction companies from 2000 to 2004. As a result of the study, 63 causes of nonconformity were found from nonconformity patterns in 10 areas. It is necessary to ameliorate quality management activity to avoid the recurrence of these nonconformity activities for the enhancement of international quality and the strength of competitiveness of the construction industry.
