Abstract |
More and more glass is used for a load bearing member. The cases of the use of glass as a structural material have shown but it is necessary to develop a design method according to the concept such as LRFD and Eurocode. Since glass is typically used as plates supported along all four edges, its strength bas been determined in condition of out-of-plane load. The presence of many random micro-cracks on the surface results in strengths below theoretical strength. And the strength of glass varies with the stress distribution, geometry, load duration and environmental conditions. For this reason modern approaches are based on the determination of the survival probability. ??Because there are no a test method specified for determination of strength and the typical values of glass strength mentioned in KS, this paper is intended to present the test methods and the statistical analysis of test results. Firstly, this paper describes a general introduction of structural glass system, such as the manufacture of float glass, mechanical properties, structural glass type and failure feature. Following, experimental results of 600 specimens tested after a method for determining the bending strength about weak axis, including the effects of edges are presented. Finally, glass strength is evaluated by a statistical approach using the weibull analysis. |
