Abstract This research is intended to propose the method of a useful planning, the court-type, for housing complex that meets the merits of both urban and rural, single and multi, through the court-type housings in International Building Exhibition in Berlin, 1987. A court-type housing forms an independent openspace, so called a court, surrounded by each building, which offers individual outdoor space for the residents. With criticism on newtown housings including high-rise and MXD, and with concerns on openspace and environment rising, court-type is to be more important housing type including privacy and community, convenience, amenity, and environmental-friendly. As a court-type housing has almost same floor area ratio in more than six stories as in a parallel type, width and height being constant, it is more suitable for housings required high density. Moreover, as a court-type is also a traditional house type in Korea as well as in Europe, this research process offers the basis of a new Korean housing type in conjunction with the both traditional and contemporary concept. It is tools for analyzing IBA housings that the planning of total plot in block, site layout type, openspace, streets, and plan type.
