Abstract |
In the fourth year of King HyeongJong's reign there was a controversy over the reconstruction of YoungNeongJeon. Nam,GuMan, on behalf of the king, suggested that the building be completely rebuilt according to the similar architectural principles employed in the Royal Ancestral Shrine. Lee,DanSang, criticizing this suggestion, strongly insisted that the existing architectural principles of the building should be preserved on the condition that it be partially revised. Clearly conscious of the accomplishment and limitation of the ideal reformism on the Royal Ancestral Shrine in the 17th century, Lee persuasively argued that YoungNeongJeon should be a shrine both for the four ancestors of the founder who opened the new dynasty and for the first ancestor among them, who could be regarded as the originator of all descendants. Lee succeeded in refuting his critics, and almost all scholars came to agree with his proposal. In the end, YoungNeongJeon was reconstructed on the basis of his proposal in the eighth year of King HyeonJong's reign. |
