Abstract A stream of air may be greatly changed due to topographic conditions. Particularly wind speed can be rapidly increased at tops of hills and escarpments. This paper aims at reviewing on speed-up factors in worldwide major codes and standards which are established in each country considering its actual circumstances. The major codes and standards in this paper include AIJ-1993, ASCE-7-02, AS/NZS 1170.2:2002, BS6399-2:1997, ISO4354(1997), and AIK-2000. The definition and application of the speed-up factors for wind loads due to topographic conditions were discussed and compared. Some examples of the speed-up factors for the some topographic conditions were evaluated using the major codes and standards. Wind-tunnel tests were also conducted to investigate the speed-up factors for the same topographic conditions and compared with results of codes and standards.
