Abstract Modern tall buildings are increasing in height with the help of improvement of a structural system, development of a construction method and enhancement of strength of structural materials. Additionally, building skyscrapers was accelerated by increasing demands of tall buildings, following urbanization. High-rise apartments are also rapidly increasing in Korea. These buildings are vulnerable to lateral force such as wind load because they are lightweight, very flexible, low in structural damping.
Especially, high-rise apartments have a lot of frequent cladding damages due to typhoon. In this paper, wind damage caused by typhoon of a high-rise apartment complex in Busan was investigated. Wind tunnel pressure experiment was carried out to investigate the cause of cladding damage. The experiment results are that change of distribution of wind pressure coefficient was observed according to the wind-induced interference effects at angle of wind attack of concern. In a certain case, an apartment building has strong negative pressure in all sides due to shielding effect of the neighboring building, and accordingly claddings may be broken in suction condition.
