Abstract In 2003, typhoon "Maemi" crashed into the southern part of Korea. Several transmission towers collapsed during the typhoon event in Geoje island and Tongyeong city(southern part of the Korean Peninsula). Accordingly the electric power supply was cut off and made big troubles. Wind flows are very complex and rapidly change with topographic conditions of hills. Especially, wind velocity may rapidly increase at the ridge and valley. In this paper, a topographic model was made to investigate the wind speed-up effects over hills with the collapsed transmission towers. Change of wind velocity due to topographic effects was investigated by wind tunnel tests. The results of wind tunnel test are that, the speed-up effects over the hill were considerably big in various wind directions at the points where the transmission towers collapsed. Speed-up factors obtained by wind tunnel test was compared with those provided by world-wide major codes and standards.
