Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of wind movement and air flow according to the blockage ratio and the building coverage ratio in an apartment housing. The wind velocity ratio is defined as the difference between the wind velocities at entering and at exiting the apartment housing. The layout types selected for the analysis are grid linear type, tower type and the combination of grid and linear type. The main reason for planning wind movement and flow is to increase the amount of wind flow, which can be indicated by the wind velocity within the apartment housing. With the Building coverage ratio being equal, the tower type of layout showed much greater wind velocity compared to the linear type. This study will focus on analyzing the wind velocity ratio according to the layout types. The result drawn from the analysis will served as a basic design data for the planning of wind flow and movement. The results of the wind flow and movement planning study is as the following :
(1) According to the wind movement simulation, the wind velocity for tower type is higher than the linear type. (2) The wind velocity was higher for the tower type to be place in the center of the housing rather than the outskirts of the housing, and the velocity increased when the tower type was in group rather than by itself. (3) The uppering the height of the buildings led to the decrease in the building coverage ratio as well as the blockage ratio. The decrease in the ratios accordingly led to the increase in the wind velocity ratio. Ultimately, as the building coverage and the blockage ratio is smaller, the velocity ratio increases.
