Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the origins of Architectural design education and their historical transformation. Studio education which is a unique way to teach architectural design has its origin in master atelier in 17th century and has evolved to current design studios in university. Teaching of architecture at school has evolved from 18th century Academy school through various institutions such as Ecole des beaux arts, ecole polytechnique, German technical college, British art and craft school to university which began in America. These institutional systems reflect different architectural cultures and traditions of different societies. Current architectural education at universities inherited traditions from design education at master atelier, scientific and technological education at polytechnic school and art and craft training, while design studio being dominant. And as architectural education takes place within the university, general education became more important in architects' training and architectural education became more disciplinary than professional.
