Abstract |
Until recently, there has existed no code provision for the design of deep beams with web openings. Also the serviceability and safety of deep members designed based on design methods for slender beams with openings can not be assured. This paper considers the cracking behavior and shear strength of deep beams with openings having various configuration types of reinforcement bars and proposes a model originated from upper-bound theorem to evaluate shear strength. Test results elucidated that the diagonal reinforcement bars around openings had a great influence over crack control and strength but the vertical reinforcement bars had little significance. A comparison exhibited that the predictions of the shear strength of the deep beams without vertical reinforcement bars around openings are in good agreement with test results. |
