So, it is positively necessary to need some guidelines for making a common good environment. In fact, in comparison to its use, the notion of underground space does not fix completely yet. That is true even among professionals. In this aspect, the research defined the terms relating underground space. Another critical task in planning underground passage shops is the classification of their components. In this research, the 6 categories relating to design of underground passage shops were extracted as the categories of passageway, shop, entrance, fire proof, amenity, and the others. And they could be used as the basic tool for case studies and establishment of guidelines. Through the analysis of 8 cases -Diamor, Whity Umeda, Namba Walk, Namba Nan-Nan Town, Avetica, Coms Garden, Crysta Nagahori, Dojima- in Osaka city central area, the specific guidelines and considerations about a ratio of passageway area, a ratio of shop ares, an average area per shop, and a width of passageway were examined. Lastly, by synthesizing the above results, architectural guidelines of underground passage shops were established as their design categories.
