Abstract |
The main purpose of this study is to figure out the structural behavior of Gukrakjeon of Bongjung-Temple which is the oldest wooden architecture in Korea, and to suggest better idea or way in terms of structures when it is restored. This pavilion is known as a typical Jusimpo-style architecture having a gable roof. As already mentioned in the previous study the structural members of the rear-side are subjected to relatively higher internal forces comparing to the those of the front-side in case of inner cross section having an unsymmetrical form. Therefore, only the real-side Bokhwaban had major damage in real as one of important connecting members. Based on the experimental test of the Bokhwaban with applying an axial force to it this research is focusing on not only to prove the cause or reason to give the rear-side Bokhwaban severe damage, but also to propose an alternative of producing the Bokhwaban to enhance the capability to resist the load from the heavy roof. As the result of this test and the previous analysis, the rear-side Bokhwaban must be suffering from high stress because Sosulhapjang which has to endure the axial load from the roof was broken in connecting area. In other words, the Sosulhapjang didn't play its role so that the Bokhwaban got the heavy load instead of the Sosulhapjang. In addition, the rear-side Bokhwaban can be made of wood which has vertical shape of annual rings. The vertical-shaped Bokhwaban is shown to have higher strength regarding the load-carrying capacity than the typical horizontal-shaped Bokhwaban. Thus, the vertical-shaped Bokhwaban is strongly recommended as an alternative. If there is an additional reinforcement to the vertical-shaped Bokhwaban with steel ties or rings, it would be perfect. |
