Abstract Daylight is one of the major parameters which determine the efficient exhibition in museums. To make better of the space quality, many architects have tried to predict daylight performance in the design of museum. The aim of this study is to predict daylight performance in the exhibition space of a museum installed with various shapes of toplight.
After an examination of various toplighting systems of museums, three major toplight shapes such as the horizontal, the inclined and the vertical toplights were evaluated for daylighting performance. First, the daylight performance was estimated using the effective transmittances for light well. Then, the effects of sunlight as well as the design sunlight ratio in the exhibition space were simulated in order to establish appropriate shapes of toplight for the exhibition spaces. Radiance was applied as a simulation program and all the data were simulated in the conditions of clear sky with sun.
