Abstract Almost existing low-rise reinforced concrete(RC) school buildings are not applied in the seismic code of Korea. At the same time, the seismic risks have been increased. Therefore, we have to provide an effective earthquake preparedness against future earthquake to reduce a major earthquake damage. The main purpose of this paper is to propose an effective evaluation method of seismic capacity for low-rise existing RC school buildings.
In this study, domestic and the other country's codes for the evaluation method of seismic capacity of existing RC school buildings are briefly summarized, and damaged school buildings due to severe earthquake in Japan are also examined. Then, the characteristics of damaged school buildings are investigated for applying existing evaluation method of seismic capacity.
Finally, we propose the new evaluation method of seismic capacity on the basis of the ductility index and seismic capacity index of the first screening method in Japan. The proposed evaluation method is verified the adequacy, compared to the seismic capacity index of the second screening method in Japan.
