Abstract This research is focused on the improvement of the indoor environment of unit classroom in elementary school applying passive design method such as light shelf and specifically shaped ceiling reflector, specific window type. After analyzing the indoor environment performance of the standard elementary school classroom in 1980s and modernized one in 1990s, couple of passive design elements are proposed to improve the current situation using computer simulation tools such as Lightscape, Airpak and Energy-10. The difference of annual energy consumption between standard elementary school and the modernized one is negligible. But the proposed design using passive design is proved to save about 11-14% and adopting the alternative energy source(geothermal energy) is proved to save about 40% .This research has a value of developing a model for sustainable classroom unit by verifying the effectiveness of passive design elements simulating whole design process for sustainable design.
