Abstract The purpose of this study is to provide a semantic analysis model of figurative languages for Korean traditional space design that can be applied in design process under assumption that the cultural identity is not static but dynamic.
The process of this study is illustrated as follows:
At first, it discusses the semantic approach in space design by reviewing system of Semantics and the interaction of signification and semiosis.
Secondly, By the theoretical basis for analysis is taken from the Peirce's Semiotics, the semiotic mapping process structure is classified in status, icons, indeces and symbols. The semantic mapping process model can involve space design process as cultural code that applies the design principles extracted from the Korean traditional space culture.
Thirdly, it suggests 3-Dimensional semantic model for Korean traditional space design analysis, vertical axis is visual mode-synchronic array, and horizontal axis is types of representamen categorized icons, indeces and symbols -diachronic array.
Finally, contemporary korean traditional space design is analysed relatively by semantic analysis model. This systemization of appropriate classifications to succeed philosophical meanings of traditional architectural space will be an aprication of effective design method to express the identity of Korea to the future designs.
By establishment of semantic analysis process for Korean space design, this study would be solve the problem to define the designer's dynamic thought in terms of semiotic structure selecting a concept to design Korean traditional space.
