Abstract This paper provides the results of the investigation on the optimum topology of the plane structures subjected to multi-load cases including the self-weight and design dependent load. The strain energy to be minimized is employed as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is adopted as the constraint function. The resizing algorithm devised from the optimality criteria method is used to update the hole size of the cell existing in each finite element. In this study, several important topology optimization parameters are throughly tested for the structures with multi-load case. The effects of design dependent load and essential boundary conditions to optimum topology is throughly investigated. From numerical tests, the optimum topology of the plane structure is closely related with the existence of the self-weight and the consideration of design dependent l
