Abstract This study is to identify the relations of the crime on the road and the sum of the window areas on house facade in residential area. The trend of study for 'defensible space' has progressed to the study of the 'visual information'. The 'visual information' was treated as the concept of 'Natural surveillance' in the 'Defensible Space' by Newman(1972). The aim of this study is to find the correlation between crime rate and window area on the house facade. Visible window areas were differentiated as 'actual window area', 'valid window area' and 'recognitional window area'. The result of this study is that the crime is affected not by 'actual window area' but by 'recognitional window area' on the house facade. For the length of 1 street, the sum of 'recognitional window area' for crime prevention should be more than 1.90㎡.
