Abstract Durability of sulfur concrete such as chemical resistance, chloride ion penetration resistance and frost resistance of concrete was investigated. In chemical resistance test, the concrete specimens made by ordinary portland cement and sulfur polymer cement were immersed in a 10% sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid solution respectively for 6 months, during which changes in weight, compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity were periodically measured. Also chloride ion penetration resistance test was carried out according to ASTM C1202. Frost resistance of sulfur concrete was carried out according to KS F2456.
Test results showed that specimens made by ordinary portland cement were severely deteriorated with chemical attack, but sulfur concrete specimens showed a good appearance, which means that sulfur concrete has a strong resistance to the chemical attack. Charges passed were 10~30 coulombs in sulfur concrete, which means chloride ion penetration is negligible. The relative dynamic modulus of elasticity was over 80% after 300 cycles of freezing and thawing test and weight change was negligible which means that sulfur concrete has a good frost resistance.
