Abstract As same as other small cities of Korea, in Anseong, the rural residence improving project has been carried out by the municipals, but the results have not been verified so far. This study surveyed the 71 buildings which was reconstructed at Anseong, 2001, reviewed the architectural characteristics and analysed the post-occupancy requirements of the users in order to provide a guideline for these kinds of similar projects hereafter.
The 71 buildings' architectural characteristics can be summarized as follows ; 1. since 81.7% of the reconstructed farmhouses are facing the south, the southern orientation preference will be maintained or intensified 2. since the main orientation of 49.3% of the samples is towards to the road, it can be said that even the roads are located at the north or at the west the main orientation of the houses is preferred towards the south 3. the volume of the houses is primarily focused on 29 Pyeong (95.7m2).
The future improving projects should consider the following aspects in accordance with the interview results ; 1. to build a bathroom, toilet or water supply in front yard is needed at the rate of 66.7% 2. parking area in site that can accommodate a car or more is preferable 3. the 66.2% of present form's vertical structure are 'the ground floored single house', but the type of 'warehouse in the ground floor and residence in the second floor' is most preferred 4. the present restriction (maximum 20 million won) to the loan for the house improving plan and the scale of the house (residence only area should be less than 100m2) should be demolished by the survey so that the candidates can choose freely in need.
