Abstract The most difficult problem regarding flexibility of apartment indoor space is that the location of wet zone is unchangeable. As the pipe layout of water-needed space such as a bathroom or a kitchen is fixed, the flexibility of floor plan is limited.
Therefore, this study is aimed to propose possible ways to make a free movement of a wet zone for the improvement of flexibility of the indoor space. First, there was an analysis on the features of the placement of a wet zone based on a Flat-type apartment, and a pipe shaft position that can implement such features was proposed. And then, the position of a compatible pipe shaft was deduced so that the space structure of adjacent units can be implemented with a pipe shaft according to the unit type. Furthermore, the floor plan was proposed for coping with the changes of housing needs through design given the movement of a wet zone along with a structure plan that allows a flexibility of the indoor space. The compatible pipe shaft plan coping with the changes of housing needs of diverse residents.
Therefore, it would enable residents to enjoy satisfactory residential lives from now on. As a new approach method for materializing the flexibility of the inner space, this method will form a foundation that makes it possible to review the orientation of open housing.
